Tell us about yourself!
Hello, my name is Vicky Chang and I’m originally from Taiwan. I have been living in Canada for eight years and currently work with the English Language School (ELS) in the Student Engagement Centre (SEC). The SEC is a welcoming space where ELS students can practice English, build confidence and create meaningful connections. Students can join conversation clubs, workshops and social events that support their learning and growth. The SEC is a safe, inclusive space where every student feels supported and valued. We are here to help students succeed academically, socially and personally. The SEC is not just a place to study but also it’s a place to belong. In my role, I help organize student activities such as the Conversation Club and cultural events, while also supporting students as they adapt to new environments.
What did you do prior to working at the U of A English Language School?
Before joining the U of A English Language School, I studied in the Television News program at NAIT as an international student. After graduating, I returned home to pursue a career in media and worked as a content creator. Those experiences taught me how to tell stories, connect with people, and share ideas and skills. I now enjoy bringing this into my work with students.
Tell us about your role at ELS.
In my role as Student Engagement Centre Assistant, I collaborate with my supervisor to organize cultural events, facilitate daily workshops for her, and provide students with information and resources to help them manage their schedules. I also support students in expanding their social life in Canada by accompanying them to our weekly outdoor activities, offering individual consultations and fostering communication between students and instructors. In addition, I contribute to the school’s weekly vlog, Simon Says, and manage the ELS social media pages. I understand the challenges of learning a new language and adapting to a new environment because I was an ELS student eight years ago as well. This experience drives my commitment to supporting students as they transition to life in Canada.
What’s your favourite part of your job?
What I enjoy most about my job is seeing students smile and have a good time at the ELS. Once they engage with us, it becomes easier for them to manage their lives after completing the program. I also love interacting and talking with them because they often share fresh and trendy information to keep me feeling young and connected. Most importantly, I value the opportunity to support their English practice, since communication in English in Canada is important. I also enjoy sharing Canadian culture with them, as it helps make their experience in Canada more meaningful and enjoyable while I continue learning alongside them. In addition, during my job, urgent situations sometimes happen and I need to react quickly to solve them. I enjoy handling these challenges because they allow me to problem-solve and push myself to grow. Finally, I also really appreciate working with my entire ELS team, who are always welcoming and willing to share their knowledge with me.
What’s your favourite place on campus and why?
There are two places on campus that I especially like: Rutherford Library and the Van Vliet Centre. Both hold many fun memories from my time as a student, which is why they are special to me.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy playing racquet sports, especially squash, and often play with friends when I have free time. I also sometimes go to the gym after work. In addition, I love learning new languages and I am currently studying Japanese. I often go to a café to study in preparation for an upcoming exam.
