Kerstyn Sorenson - Academic Advisor in the KSR Student Services Office
Can you describe your role in KSR?
I am one of three undergraduate Academic Advisors within the faculty of KSR. I am here to help incoming and current KSR students navigate their degree program, from start to finish. I can answer questions related to any of our four undergraduate degree program requirements, course registration/scheduling, transfer credit, KSR study abroad opportunities, academic standing, convocation, and more. I also encourage students to take advantage of the various academic, financial, health and wellness supports we have at the UofA. If an inquiry is out of scope, or if I’m not the right person to help, I will refer students to another campus staff member who can.
What is your academic background?
I have worked on campus for 15 years. My roles have primarily been student focused, in both the undergraduate and graduate sectors. Recently I transitioned from a central role in the Student Service Centre, in the Office of the Registrar. I enjoy working with people and helping them achieve their academic endeavours.
What do you enjoy most about working on this team?
The KSR Student Service office is small but mighty. There are many people who have been in KSR for a long time, so the knowledge and historical information has been plentiful. During my first month working alongside the KSR team, staff and students have been very welcoming. I can say this is a very positive and collegial community. Being curious and asking questions is encouraged. I feel a strong sense of belonging and this has helped me settle into this role nicely.
What are some of your passions outside of your role in KSR?
Outside of work, I like to travel. I am currently saving up for my next big adventure, Asia! I like to host festive seasonal parties with food, drinks and themed decor. I enjoy playing board games and cards as well as my old (but functional) Nintendo 64. I love country music and enjoy going to concerts and festivals. My fiancé and I have a young daughter and two furbabies, who are rescue dogs from California. There is never a dull moment in our household!
What’s something else your KSR colleagues and students might be surprised to learn about you?
I was born in Edmonton and have lived here my whole life. Even during our snowy Alberta winters, I enjoy ice cold drinks year round, cheers!
