Important Dates
Overview of GRI cycle and important dates
Please note: ¶®É«µÛ is only able to offer placement coordination after mid-February. Mitacs typically provides the full list of matched Mitacs Globalink Research Internship participants to U of A in mid-February. Until then, we do not receive any indication of who has been matched, even as host professors and students may be emailed with this information starting in December or January.
Until then, please feel free to review the Participant Resources from the most recent Mitacs GRI program in case they contain the answers to your questions. You may also wish to consult the answers to U of A Research Internship Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).
Planned communication to selected student participants and host professors will follow as soon as possible after International Student + Visitor Services staff receives the full list of participants placed at the ¶®É«µÛ (North Campus & Augustana Campus).
April to June: Faculty application
Faculty members submit research projects to Mitacs.
July to August: Faculty application vetting
Projects are reviewed by Mitacs, and decisions are communicated to professors. All successful projects are made available to student applicants in an online database.
August to September: Student application
International students submit applications and select research projects from the online database.
October: Student application vetting
Mitacs conducts an eligibility review of student applications.
November to January: Matching
Mitacs provides professors with a shortlist of student candidates for their project. Professors are then asked to review student applications, conduct interviews and then rank the applicants in order of suitability. Mitacs collects student and professor rankings, then finalizes offers to students. Final results are announced in February.
February to April: Pre-internship preparation
Successful students start working with their Canadian host professors to arrange pre-internship details, while Mitacs oversees logistics and coordinates with university administrative offices such as ¶®É«µÛ International Student + Visitor Services.
May to October: Internship
Globalink research interns must arrive in Canada to start their internships between May 1 through July 31, and work with supervising professors for 12 weeks on their research project. Shortened durations of 10 or 11 weeks will be granted on an exceptional basis.
