Welcome to our program
We are fortunate to have a great team including residents, administrative personnel, allied health, and faculty. There are currently 32 residents spread out over 5 years of training in our fully accredited program by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Some of our strengths include a wide variety of surgical cases, wide catchment area. Our residents are exposed to a diverse range of clinical settings as Edmonton zone hospitals are at the forefront of modern medical care. They serve as major referral centers in the areas of organ transplantation, pediatric surgery, cardiac surgery, high-risk obstetrics, trauma and neurosurgery. In addition, our dynamic faculty provide leading-edge care in the areas of regional anesthesia, vascular and thoracic anesthesia, and ambulatory surgery. Our residents have gone on to meaningful careers across North America both in the community and as academic faculty.
Our department is also comprised of accomplished clinical and basic science researchers who contribute significantly in the area of academic medicine. Anesthesia Crisis Resource Management (ACRM) simulations run annually in addition to a content-related simulation curriculum throughout the year. This helps prepare our trainees to become consultant anesthesiologists, as well as solid ambassadors and innovators in the fields of anesthesiology and medicine.
Our staff have trained locally, nationally, and internationally; they actively participate in day-to-day clinical teaching, academic teaching, simulation, and exam preparation.
Our program has outstanding exam preparation opportunities, formal personal and academic mentorship opportunities as well as award-winning educators. We also collaborate with other specialties to train our residents (i.e Simulation training with Obstetrics & Gynecology residents)
This activity takes place on the backdrop of Edmonton, Alberta, one of North America's fastest-growing and vibrant cities.
We are looking forward to meeting you!

Meet Our Residents

I was born in Argentina but assimilated Canadian culture in Vancouver at the ripe age of 7. I went to medical school at UBC and traded the rainy and warm winters for cold but sunny ones in Edmonton for residency. I’m leaning more towards the latter.
I’ve met some great people within the program and outside of the hospital and I’m very grateful for my community here. Outside of the hospital, I enjoy an active lifestyle of running, cycling, and soccer balanced with cold beverages and Edmonton’s gastronomy with some pals.
– Dr. Jeronimo Chapur (R3)

I'm Richard, one of the new R1's to the program! I was born and raised in Edmonton so I can attest there is much more to the city than meets the eye. There is always something to find joy in whether it be watching the northern lights at Elk Island, attending a summer street festival, or going for a run in the river valley. Beyond medicine, you'll find me golfing in and around the city or road biking in the countryside!
Edmonton is a charming city that offers a perfect balance of being large enough to provide exposure to all the exciting aspects of anesthesia especially considering our vast catchment area, yet small enough to foster meaningful, lasting friendships.
– Dr. Richard Mah (R1)

I was born and raised in Edmonton, I actually grew up only a block away from the university. I love spending my free time playing volleyball, scuba diving, and reading romance books. One of the highlights of our program is the chance to experience all the anesthesia subspecialties, including cardiac and pediatrics. My advice to applicants is to not be afraid to let your personality shine, want to get to know you!
– Dr. Jillian Meyer (R2)

I am one of the R4’s and a co-lead resident for the program. I grew up in rural Alberta and BC before eventually attending the 雅伎著 for medical school and, I have been lucky enough to continue my training in Edmonton.
What do you like about Edmonton: Having also resided in Victoria, Vancouver, and Calgary, I am certain Edmonton is a great city with plenty to offer. There is an outstanding food/drink scene, great access to green spaces and, it is very easy to navigate with a relatively short commute to any of the major hospitals in the city (residency is busy, don’t waste time commuting!).
What are the highlights of the program for you: The program at UofA provides the opportunity to be involved in advanced cases and pathology at an early stage of training. We have limited fellows with an enormous catchment area which allows for junior residents to be involved in complex cases early on. The residency program is supported by excellent clinical staff - not to mention an amazing program director!
What is one piece of advice that you want to share with applicants about the interview process: One piece of advice I would offer applicants would be to know themselves, their experience and values, and understand how that, along with their strengths and weaknesses, may make them a good fit for anesthesiology and the program in Edmonton.
– Dr. Quinn McLellan (R4)

Hi! I am Zoë, one of the current R2s! I am a Calgary to Edmonton convert, completing my medical degree here and happily proceeding with my Residency in Anesthesiology. When I'm not at the hospital, I am enjoying the outdoors either by running through the river valley or taking my two (very small) dogs around the neighbourhood.
My favourite thing about Edmonton (aside from the Autumns, which are pretty spectacular) is the robust and thriving food scene! I am so grateful to be completing my residency in a location where the ease of life is matched with well rounded clinical exposure and training.
– Dr. Zoë Brody (R2)

I was born in Calgary, but moved to Ontario after high school before eventually making my way back home to Alberta for residency! Despite the classic Calgary–Edmonton rivalry, this city has truly surprised me, and I’ve built an amazing community here.
When I’m not in the hospital, you can find me hiking in the mountains, running in the river valley, or exploring Edmonton’s food scene with friends and my co-residents!
