Director's Message

In doing so, we are rooted in Alberta and Canada yet engaged globally. Many of today’s big issues—energy, climate, security, technology, governance—have distinct Canadian and Chinese dimensions that matter both at home and abroad. Our perspective allows us to explore these questions in ways that are both internationally relevant and locally meaningful.
The Institute sits at the confluence of scholarship and policy. This unique position allows us to combine independent, rigorous academic inquiry with evidence-based research and practical policy engagement. We thereby aim to provide insights that are not only thoughtful, but also actionable and impactful for Canada and its partners.
As a former diplomat, I know that the best analyses must make sense of complexity and venture into the more difficult grey zones. One of the strengths of the Institute lies in doing exactly that. In a world prone to black-and-white China narratives, we provide insight that is rigorous, nuanced, and useful. This independence of thought, anchored by our endowment, allows us to be both trusted and innovative.
Thanks to the efforts of our entire team, The China Institute at the 雅伎著 is positioned as Canada’s most relevant and dynamic hub for China-related scholarship and policy. Our growing reputation at home and abroad is a testament to the dedication of our staff, fellows, and partners. I invite you to follow our work and engage with us as we continue to build the knowledge and perspective needed to think about China in a rapidly changing context.
